Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC is internationally recognized for its development and application of innovative new treatments for childhood illness and injury. The Plasticity of Language and Epilepsy Research (POLER) lab within Children’s National uses neuroimaging (fMRI, DWI, T1), neuropsychological evaluation, and neurological examination to study the effect of epilepsy and its treatments in children. Projects also includes screening for cognitive and psychosocial comorbidities in the clinic. Our work is directly applicable to clinical outcomes and improving how we care for children with epilepsy. Three primary investigators provide the mentorship and training in the lab: Madison Berl, Ph.D. who is a pediatric neuropsychologist, William Davis Gaillard, M.D. who is a child neurologist and Leigh Sepeta, Ph.D., who is a pediatric neuropsychologist. The research lab has a large collaborative team including computational scientists, developmental psychologists, linguists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, MR physicists, research assistants, and other student trainees. We use Linux and PC based software to analyze our imaging and behavioral data using multivariate statistical analyses. More information can be found at polerlab.org
Given the multidisciplinary nature of the lab, students with a variety of interests are encouraged to apply, including those who are interested in psychology, medicine, biostatistics, and biomedical engineering.
